One of the most important dates in the Lao calendar is Lao New year (known as Pi Mai Lao). It lasts 3 days (14-16th April 2019) and is a time of endless fun and celebration … and water.

Pi Mai occurs before the rainy season starts and recognizes the importance water plays in people’s lives. The new year is a time for purification and to reflect on the year ahead. Buddha images are taken out of temples and cleansed with sacred water. The sacred water is scented with ith perfume and flowers. Over the three days there will be a lot of water throwing, building of sand stupas and a beauty pagnent.
